Title page, headings, in-text citations and the reference list.
Paper structure
An APA 7 student paper has a title page, the main text, and a reference list starting on a new page. Use 1-inch margins, a legible font and double spacing throughout.
Headings
APA uses five heading levels. Level 1 is centered and bold; Level 2 is flush-left and bold; Level 3 is flush-left, bold and italic.
In-text citations
Cite the author and year: (Smith, 2024). For three or more authors use (Smith et al., 2024) from the first citation.
Reference list
Start on a new page titled “References”, centered and bold. Order entries alphabetically and use a hanging indent.
