What is APA 7th edition?

APA style, published by the American Psychological Association, is the standard for the social sciences. The 7th edition (2019) simplified several rules — for example, “Retrieved from” is no longer required before URLs, and up to 20 authors are now listed in a reference.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need “Retrieved from” for web sources? No - in APA 7th you generally list the URL directly, unless the content is designed to change over time (then add a retrieval date).
How many authors before I use “et al.”?In-text, use “et al.” for three or more authors from the first citation. In the reference list, list up to 20 authors.
Is the APA citation generator free?Yes. Generating references, saving your bibliography and exporting to Word or BibTeX are all free with no account required.
What if there is no author or no date?Move the title into the author position when there is no author, and use (n.d.) in place of the year when there is no date.
